Superior Cold-Weather Performance
As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F (4°C), most fuels have a cloud point near 32°F (0°C). The point at which the wax crystals clog the fuel filter is known as the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP). AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver lowers the CFPP by as much as 34°F (19°C) in ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD). It also reduces the pour-point temperature of treated diesel fuel, providing better fuel delivery to the injectors during cold weather. It is formulated with a jet-fuel type deicer that controls ice formation in all sections of the fuel system. Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for the use of #1 diesel fuel, enabling better fuel economy, performance and lubricity. Product performance may vary depending on diesel grade and quality.

Pour Point Vs. CFPP
It is important to distinguish between CFPP and pour point. Many competitors make great claims regarding pour point, leading consumers to believe their products are superior when they actually have an inferior CFPP. Once fuel surpasses its cloud point, the wax crystals begin to clog the fuel filter. The CFPP temperature is a more important characteristic than pour point because the engine will not run if fuel cannot pass through the fuel filter.

1. Question:
Why did AMSOIL decide to reintroduce a combination Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow Improver (DFC) additive?
Answer: AMSOIL responded to the need for convenience by providing a product that combined the properties of the Diesel Fuel Concentrate and the Cold Flow Improver in a single package.

2.Question:
What function does AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow Improver perform?
Answer: This product combines all the benefits of both the AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Concentrate and the AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver. The diesel fuel concentrate portion of the product performs several important tasks, including keeping injectors, rings and piston crowns lubricated and free of soot buildup. It improves lubricity and minimizes wear throughout the fuel system. It also helps manage water, which enters fuel through condensation from the air inside fuel tanks and demulsifies fuel/water mixtures. The cold flow attributes reduce cold flow filter plugging point and diesel fuel pour point.

3. Question:
What are some key advantages for the AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow Improver?
Answer: a. Increases fuel economy up to 5%.
b. Restores horsepower and throttle response to “like new” performance.
c. Cleans injectors and combustion chambers.
d. Provides superior fuel flow to help prevent filter plugging in cold temperatures.
e. Reduces pour point of the fuel, making fuel flow to the engine easier.
f. Improves diesel engine reliability in cold temperatures.
g. Effective in a broad range of diesel fuels, including biodiesel and hard to treat USLD fuels.
h. Minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with lower quality #1 diesel fuel during cold temperatures.
i. Excellent for use with home heating oil and kerosene heat systems.
j. Aids in the retention of the engine oil’s total base number (TBN).
k. Extends fuel filter life.

4. Question:
What is Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (USLD)?
Answer: USLD is fuel which has been hydro-treated at the refinery to reduce sulfur to no more than 0.0015% by weight (15 PPM). It is a legal specification mandated for environmental reasons and is required for all on-road diesel applications. It does, however, reduce the diesel fuel’s natural lubricating properties.

5. Question: Will DFC adequately treat federally regulated USLD?
Answer: Yes. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow was specifically designed and tested with ultra low sulfur diesel fuels. This fuel is different than traditional diesel fuel in several ways and is more difficult to properly treat. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow also treats traditional high sulfur content diesel fuel.

6. Question:
Does AMSOIL DFC improve engine performance?
Answer: By keeping injectors clean, AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow maintains the designed performance of the engine. If injectors become clogged, the spray pattern is affected and AMSOIL additives will clean the injectors to restore the original pattern and performance level.

7. Question:
What is the treat rate for Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow?

Answer: The treat rate is 2 ounces of additive per 5 gallons of fuel or one 16 ounce bottle to 40 gallons of fuel. The bottle is natural in color and is graduated for accurate dispensing to ensure proper mixing ratios.

8. Question:
What should be done to adjust for the cold temperatures during the winter months?
Answer: AMSOIL recommends purchasing diesel fuel that has been blended for winter use in that specific region, then adding AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow. This will ensure the engine or heating system will function on very cold days when needed most.

9. Question:
Should DFC be used in the diesel fuel to keep already gelled fuel from clogging the delivery system?
Answer: No. As temperatures drop, the wax, which is naturally found in the fuel, begins to form crystals. This is called the cloud point. These wax crystals will eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel or prevent it from starting. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow must be added to the fuel before it gets cold enough for the wax crystals to begin forming. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow will not dissolve wax or improve diesel fuel once wax crystals form. Low quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40°F. AMSOIL recommends Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow be added to fuel when temperatures approach 32°F, which is above the cloud point of most diesel fuel.

10. Question:
What type of performance can be expected from the new AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow?
Answer: AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow Improver inhibits wax crystal formation and can improve diesel fuel pour point. With the incorporation of DFC into ULSD, pour point decreased 31°F (17°C) and Cold Flow Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) was decreased by 36°F (20°C). Product performance depends on fuel type and quality.

11. Question:
Competitive products claim better cold temperature properties than AMSOIL DFC. Are these claims legitimate?
Answer: AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow was tested against a leading diesel fuel cold flow improver as part the development. The AMSOIL product outperformed competitive products particularly with B20 biodiesel and ULSD. Competitor claims can be misleading. It is important to distinguish between cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and pour point. Many competitive products make great pour point claims, leading consumers to believe their products are superior, when in reality the CFPP is inferior. The CFPP depression temperature is more important because fuel will not make it to the engine if the fuel filter is clogged.

12. Question:
What about using #1 diesel fuel instead?
Answer: AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for #1 diesel fuel in cold weather which reduces overall costs and lessens the impact from loss of lubricity with #1 diesel fuel. While #1 diesel fuel has an advantage in low temperature operability, there are several disadvantages as well. The energy content of #1 diesel fuel is about 95% that of #2 diesel fuel, resulting in reduced fuel economy and horsepower. #1 diesel fuel contains kerosene which provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel distributor, increasing the chances of wear on these critical parts. In addition, #1 diesel fuel is more expensive.

14. Question:
Does AMSOIL DFC meet the federal regulations for ULSD fuel?
Answer: Yes. The statement found on the back label of AMSOIL DFC states, “This diesel fuel additive complies with the federal low sulfur content requirements for use in diesel motor vehicles and non-road engines.”
EPA regulation for diesel fuel additives went into effect on June 1, 2006. This regulation requires that all diesel fuel additives sold after June 1, 2006 with a sulfur content not exceeding 15 ppm sold in containers for use by the ultimate consumer must have the following statement:
“This diesel fuel additive complies with the federal low sulfur content requirements for use in diesel motor vehicles and non-road engines.'' For more information consult: http://www.aspalliance.org/dieselfuel/index.htm

15. Question:
Will using Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow void engine warranties?
Answer: The use of Diesel Concentrate plus Cold Flow will not void engine warranties and it is designed to help decrease engine fuel system wear from poor lubricity ULSD fuels.

Beware of the new ULSD also known as S15!
Date Line 2 June 2006

The transition to S15 also known as ULSD or ultra low Sulphur diesel fuel has occurred on Oct 15th, 2006 here in the United States. S15 has only 15 parts per million of sulfur compared with the previous S500 which has 500 parts per million. Sulfur is a lubricant in the diesel fuel delivery system. The process to remove the sulfur also removes the aromatic hydrocarbons which is the chemical that keeps diesel fuel system seals plump & pliable. This new S15 diesel fuel will enable advanced exhaust after treatment technologies in 2007 & newer diesel engines, such as catalytic particulate filters. The EPA and the DTF are both calling it a clean diesel milestone. While owners of 2006 & older diesel engines are all about to call it a diesel engine disaster.

Facts: Sulphur is a diesel engine lubricant. Prior to the early 1990's Sulphur content of diesel fuel was 5000 PPM. In the early 1990's the EPA mandated a cut of Sulphur to 1/10 the previous levels & S500 or 500 PPM Sulphur content fuel was born. This low Sulphur fuel caused a huge problem with diesel fuel system injection pumps burning out because of loss of the lubricating Sulphur. Fast forward to Oct. 15th 2006 & the EPA did it again by requiring no more than 1/33 the previous Sulphur content. Now we have S15 or 15 PPM Sulphur content in our diesel fuel. What is more, because of the technology required to wash out the Sulphur in the fuel the side effect is it also washes out the aromatic hydrocarbons that keep fuel system seals pliable.

The Problem: Chevron states that the new ULSD (15 PPM Sulphur) EPA fuel mandated for October 15, 2006 at your favorite diesel station fuel pump may cause your IP pump seals and other fuel system o-rings to fail because of the lack of aromatics in the newly mandated diesel fuel will cause the seals to shrink. Chevron says you are responsible for repair costs as the EPA has mandated this new diesel fuel.

Read what Chevron says about pending seal failures

Technical Bulletin Chevron Products Company
Summary
Some vehicle owners, who recently began using the new EPA regulated ultra low sulfur (S15) diesel fuel, report that their vehicles have developed fuel leaks. Similar occurrences were reported in the early 1990’s when low sulfur fuel (S500) was introduced. The leaks in the 1990’s occured at points where elastomers (O-rings) are used to seal joints in the fuel system.  During the 1993-94 period, the most common occurrences were injector fuel pump leaks.
This problem is not exclusive to one engine type, one fuel type, or one geographic region. It can affect some engines that are older than ten years, but some newer ones have experienced the problem as well.
The reoccurrence of these fuel leaks could become widespread geographically when the majority of fuel supplies are switched to S15. However, it is anticipated that only a very small fraction of the vehicles may be affected. Of course it can be serious for owners whose vehicles are affected.
Chevron is working with diesel equipment manufacturers and providing technical support to fleets. The evidence to date suggests the problem is linked to a change in the aromatics content of the S15 ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, to seal material and age of the material.

Discussion
In October 1993, the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments required that diesel fuel for “on highway” vehicles contain no more than 0.05 percent sulfur by weight. Before this, diesel fuel typically contained 0.2 to 0.4 percent sulfur by weight. Reports of fuel system seal leaks surfaced shortly after the introduction of the then new fuel designated as S500. Affected components were mostly fuel pump and injectors. Starting June 2006, refineries will be required to produce diesel fuel with a
much lower sulfur level (15 ppm) than was contained in S500 (500 ppm).  The new fuel is commonly known as ultra low sulfur fuel designated as S15 by the ASTM standard D 975. As noted earlier in some areas where this new S15 fuel has been introduced ahead of schedule, some occurrences of similar fuel leaks have been reported.
Should further elastomer failures occur, they are expected to be sporadic.  Seals in some vehicles may fail while similar seals in other vehicles using the same fuel may not.  Past experience indicates that the common denominator is expected to be nitrile rubber (Buna N) seals that have seen long service at high temperatures. High temperatures have a tendency to accelerate seal aging. The reduction in sulfur content is not responsible for the problem.
Two explanations have been offered to explain the sudden occurrence of seal failures:

Many of the new S15 fuels are expected to contain lower levels of aromatics.  The change from a higher to a lower aromatics fuel can cause seals to shrink.
Aged seals, which do not have the elasticity to adapt to this change, appear to fail sooner.
Some of the new S15 fuels are expected to be more susceptible to oxidation. The resulting oxidation products (peroxides) could attack the seal material and cause it to prematurely age.
To date we have not seen evidence of peroxide formation, therefore, we believe that most cases are related directly to the reduction in the aromatics content of the fuel. This reduction is a result of increased hydrotreating to reduce fuel’s sulfur level to 15 ppm. Fuel additives do not appear to be a solution, since they do not change the aromatics content of the fuel. The seal failure is not related to fuel lubricity. Lubricity affects wear of metal parts.  There is no relationship between the fuel lubricity level and the elastomer failure. Currently all fuels in the U.S. must meet a minimum lubricity level. The elastomer failures in the 1990’s were addressed by a California Governor’s Task Force. A comprehensive report was issued in 1994 which includes more details about this subject. For an online copy go to:
ftp://ftp.arb.ca.gov/carbis/reports/l63 9.pdf
Recommendation
If you have a diesel fuel system that is leaking, Chevron recommends that you contact your equipment manufacturer for advice on the choice of a replacement elastomer for the seals and future maintenance schedule.  Newly replaced seals should not develop a leak.
If you have not experienced this problem, you still may wish to consult your equipment manufacturer about a maintenance schedule for your aged nitrile rubber (Buna N) seals and manufacturer’s experience with lower aromatics diesel
.

It compensates for the variances in quality of different fuels (including biodiesel) and the deficiencies of today’s Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel (ULSD) for better engine operation. New engine technology, tighter tolerances and emission regulations require high-quality diesel fuel for long-term engine operability. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate meets the low sulfur mandate. It improves diesel fuel quality to exceed today’s stringent performance requirements. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate extends equipment life, lowers operating costs and improves diesel performance.

Diesel Cold Flow Improver (DFF)
A premium fuel additive that lowers diesel fuel cold flow properties as much as 20°F (11°C).

Package sizes include:

16-oz. Bottle
16-oz. Bottles (case of 12)

AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver (ACF) has been reformulated to provide maximum cold flow capabilities in diesel fuels. The new formulation provides superior performance over the former DFF formulation, which is available while supplies last.

AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver
AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver provides superior fuel flow to help prevent filter plugging in cold temperatures. It is formulated for a broad range of diesel fuels, including #1 diesel fuel, #2 diesel fuel, biodiesel and hard-to-treat ULSD fuels. AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver minimizes the need for blending standard #2 diesel fuel with lower quality #1 diesel fuel, helping maintain fuel economy and keep engines functioning normally. It is also excellent for use with home heating oil and kerosene heat systems.

AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver uses a jet-fuel-type deicer that disperses water to control ice formation throughout the fuel system. It inhibits wax crystal formation and can improve diesel pour point by as much as 58°F (32°C), allowing fuel to flow to the engine more easily and improving diesel engine reliability in cold temperatures. In addition, AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver lowers the CFPP by as much as 34°F (18°C) in ULSD.

Concentrated ACF vs. ACF Blended with Fuel
The new formulation of AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver will show no signs of solidifying in its concentrated state in the bottle until the temperature reaches -22°F (-30°C), a great improvement over the previous formulation, which solidified in the bottle at 0°F (-18°C). Cold Flow Improver will only freeze in its concentrated state, and AMSOIL recommends storing it at temperatures above 0°F (-18°C). If ACF is allowed to freeze in the bottle it can be thawed and used. When mixed with diesel fuel, ACF effectively improves diesel fuel cold temperature properties. It is recommended, however, that fuel be treated at temperatures above 32° F (0°C). ACF will not dissolve wax crystals which have already formed in the fuel.

Application Information
AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver is specifically formulated for improving fuel flow, helping maintain fuel integrity and preventing the clogging of filters and injectors. It is excellent for use with diesel fuels, heating oils and kerosene. Two oz. of AMSOIL Cold Flow Improver treats five gallons of fuel, or one 16 oz. bottle for 40 gallons. The clear bottles feature an easy-to-read graduation label for accurate dispensing, helping ensure proper treat ratios.
